This past year has seen significant discourse on addressing sexual harassment in fandom.

Friends will remember that I chaired Arisia in 2011, and worked with the executive board to ban a man who harassed several individuals (not just women) -- banned first from staff, then the 2011 convention, and then from 2012. This past week, I forwarded my post-con 2011 report to the division head currently tasked with making Arisia 2014 safe, at her request.

I chaired Readercon last July, and we were at the epicenter of a harassment firestorm. After said storm, Readercon staff (particularly [livejournal.com profile] rosefox and my beloved [livejournal.com profile] omnia_mutantur) put extensive effort into creating a clear new Code of Conduct, Policies, and Procedures for addressing reports of harassment and problematic behavior. It is my fervent hope and belief that we are making vast improvements, although I know it's unlikely we've gotten it perfect right out of the gate.

I care about fandom. I care passionately about conventions. I used to average more than one per month. I have traveled internationally to meet strangers and talk about science fiction (Montreal, Melbourne, London, Amsterdam, Helsinki, and Aland, so far!).

I am working actively on making a better future in fandom, on multiple fronts, as much as I can. I'm even contributing significantly to the Helsinki Worldcon Bid (here, have a reminder to show us your support!), which is another facet of conversing about the future.

Fandom has a long way to go. But as Elise Matthesen is demonstrating, with help from Jim Hines and Seanan McGuire, amongst others, fandom is definitely *having* this conversation now. Which is fantastic.

We have and will will make mistakes. I have certainly made more than my share. (Not for nothing, but we all agree now that a zero tolerance policy discourages some reports, potentially making a less safe environment. To my grave, I will wish I'd paid more attention to our policy prior to Readercon 23.)

Hopefully we will continue to learn.

Window To Paris (Okhno v'Parizh), Sunday 8:00pm

In St. Petersburg in the early 1990s, right after the fall of the Soviet
Union, some people in a communal apartment discover a wormhole in space
that terminates in Paris. Visiting the west helps them see more of their
own country. ``It's like a Soviet version of Being John Malkovitch'' says
Mary. This beautifully-made comedy will be introduced by Andrey
Fedorov, an actual Russian, who will provide a little background.
In Russian with subtitles.
{1 hr. 27 min., in 35mm}

Sunday at 8 pm showing at Arisia.

Who's with me??? :)

My apologies for the delay; this has been a somewhat crazy week.

The hotel update is essentially that the Westin wants us to continue sorting through the waiting list on a rolling basis. As we finish up allocating rooms that were set aside for particular uses, we will shift people from the waiting list into those rooms. Ultimately we think that everyone currently on the waiting list will get a room (though not everyone will get the type of room they requested -- the hotel only has so many doubles). We are also looking into overflow hotel options (there are two other hotels within a short walk from the Westin), although we hope that won't be necessary.

The Westin has many more rooms than the Hyatt had, or even the Park Plaza. However, we may have more people interested in staying in the hotel this year than previous years. It will just take more patience than we had expected.

For anyone who is not yet on the waiting list: the waiting list is still the best option for getting a room in the Westin. The hotel will only be releasing rooms to those on the waiting list, so there is no reason not to be on it.

We will post updates about updates about the hotel status to the Arisia website as well as LJ, FB, Twitter, etc., when we have them. If there will be an overflow hotel, that determination will be made based on the status of the waiting list once all rooms and suites are allocated.

And thank you for your patience!

We're trying a new event on for size this year -- a breakfast buffet event with GOHs and other Special Guests (including Seanan McGuire, Cat Valente, Hildy Silverman, Frank Wu, and others)! Breakfast price is comparable to prices in the hotel restaurant, with the added bonus of cool conversation! Go to http://2011.arisia.org/buffet for tickets & more info.

Turtle Track (childcare) is currently full. To get on the waiting list, email reg@arisia.org with "Turtle Track" in the subject line. Every year, there are some cancellations, so don't despair if you haven't yet signed up. (Same is true for hotel reservations, actually. Last year, we ended up with a couple of empty rooms in the main hotel, due to cancellations.)

Speaking of hotel reservations: The hotel has turned off the public reservations page while we sort through the Waiting List together. We're working on an alternate solution for getting reservations into their system, but the meantime, please have patience. We expect to have a further update tomorrow night, after more conferring with the hotel.

Hey, folks, I wanted to point out that some of you aren't aware of this, but the rough draft schedule for events and program items at Arisia this year is already in progress. If you want to be on a program item or putting on an event, the time to act was actually prior to now, but your absolute last chance to email program@arisia.org or events@arisia.org and get on the schedule is coming up right quick, now.

I suggest you email what you're thinking asap to the relevant division (or if you're not sure, proposals@arisia.org). Please don't email me (or talk with me verbally) about it, as I'm not in charge of the schedules involved, and have delegated the fun stuff to people I trust with it -- [livejournal.com profile] majes, [livejournal.com profile] crazybone, and [livejournal.com profile] omly. :)

I am utterly charmed by the options under "how I heard about Josh" when joining his newsletter. Yes, I know I should've discovered this ages ago, but I'm charmed now, and wanted to share.

I selected "Wanted Poster." ;)

Straw Poll

[Poll #1526405]

Comments about why, factors, what you're looking forward to, etc. are welcome in the comments section. :)
chaiya: (Arisia badge)
As revealed yesterday in the concom meeting, the slate of guests of honor for Arisia 2011 is as follows:

Kelley Armstrong, writer goh
Shaenon Garrity, webcomic goh
Josh Simpson, artist goh
René Walling, fan goh (aka [livejournal.com profile] cyberneticnomad, co-chair of the 2009 Montreal Worldcon)

In addition, I am still waiting to hear final confirmation from the likely musical goh. We had been holding off on the announcement for this reason, but since the Arisia 2010 Souvenir Book (and thus the 2011 ad) needed to go to press, it seems a good time to announce publicly where things stand. :)

Arisia 2011 will be held in the Waterfront Westin on January 14-17, 2011.

I know we're currently gearing up for a great convention in a couple of weeks, but feel free to join me in my excitement for 2011, too!
chaiya: (Arisia badge)
I'm making progress on the GOH front for Arisia. It is *way* exciting. :)

'Course, I still won't announce them until I have a full roster. But still. I brim over with excitement!
chaiya: (bike)
I'm at 594 miles, atm. [livejournal.com profile] hakamadare and I biked out to the Arisia meeting at [livejournal.com profile] paradoox and [livejournal.com profile] smozz's house today, and then [livejournal.com profile] palmwiz and [livejournal.com profile] noeltheone joined us for the bike ride back.

It was significantly awesome. My birthday morning on Friday kinda sucked (another dental appointment, plus scheduling snafu, plus having my hair pulled out when an unfamiliar person styled it at the salon). Ever since then, though, my days have improved fairly well. Today was pretty awesome, in fact. I even got serenaded by a chorus of boys singing happy birthday to me over ice cream cake! I approve of ice cream cake. A lot. Thank you so much, [livejournal.com profile] paradoox.

[livejournal.com profile] palmwiz also started the heck out of me on the bike ride by asking if I wanted to go faster, and when I responded with a "yes" and tried pedaling faster, he was suddenly pushing me from my sacrum. It was thrilling, and really really speedy, but startling. I whooped a lot.

All in all, today was an excellent present. Despite having to run my first Arisia corporate meeting. ;)
chaiya: (zomg!)
It's official. The corporation tonight approved me as Arisia conchair 2011.

*gulp* So much to do!!!! ;)
chaiya: (all evil eradicated)
Because I am curious ...

[Poll #1148275]
chaiya: (sleepy)
Arisia is almost over for the year. I didn't make it to any of the cool programming that was planned, and I sometimes forgot to eat and sleep. But I danced all night ('til 5 am!), I caught up with a lot of friends, I helped produce an amazing amount of printed material, and I genuinely enjoyed just about everything I did.

I think I have a contact high from the amount of hugs I've gotten.

I love this convention. This is why I keep doing the work to help make it happen. :)

Sleep

Jan. 20th, 2008 09:51 am
chaiya: (sleepy)
Thursday night, slept 7 hours.
Friday night, slept 5 hours.
Last night, slept 3.5 hours.

This is going to be problematical.

But I'm having a great time!
chaiya: (crystal as menolly)
I am still looking through the submissions I've gotten and getting organized within the department. So if you were holding off on sending something in, or if you forgot the deadline, please just send it in asap! The original announcement ... )
chaiya: (avenger)
Hilary Scott's art installation under the McGrath-O'Brien Highway was vandalized. Hilary was the artist Guest of Honor at Arisia 2007.

Thought folks might want to know. I'm sending a note of condolence to the artist, and encourage others to do the same, particularly if you met him or saw his work recently.

Update-y

chaiya: (brown hat)
Wonderful [livejournal.com profile] goldsquare gave me his boyhood dressers after all, so I have stopped scouring Craigslist. I was going to sand and refinish them today, but it's chilly and looking rain-like. We'll see. They are exactly what I was looking for, though, which makes me happy.

The house is still very much under construction. OMG. It will be an entirely new house by the time we're done. Y'all should come see it then. Not now. I should post pictures now, but don't have brain.

My inbox is back down to 900ish. This is awesome, and represents a bit of work. I know, I know, not done yet.

We do have a new housemate for the short-to-medium term, Kirsten. She's in her last semester at college. Seems to be going well so far, and that's saying something, given the stress the construction has added to our household.

[livejournal.com profile] lightfixer might come over soon and finish setting up the music server. Then I might be able to upload all my new music from Falconridge and Campfire. I have so much good music to catch up on! Yay!

There was brunch this morning, sort of. It was nice, despite the construction dust factor. I think I hang out a lot with the Arisia geeks, lately. And I talk a lot about Arisia stuff. I swear, it's not my whole life. :P

I went to the Big Party yesterday. I swam, and hugged lots and lots and lots of people. Saw tons & tons of y'all. Then I left with [livejournal.com profile] noeltheone to go see a drag king show in the evening. Which was also awesome. :)

Going backward, went to [livejournal.com profile] naufiel and [livejournal.com profile] mtolan's for Shabbat dinner Friday night. Fabulousness. We had some good geeking and some spectacular eating, and it was midnight before I realized it. Given how tiring my week was, that's saying a lot.

In general, I think I like being social again. I wish we could do it more at home, though. Soon!
chaiya: (crystal as menolly)
Ever wonder what kind of advice Worf would give to a lovelorn fannish couple? Or picture how Malcolm Renolds might dispense his opinion if writing to a lonely computer jock? Want to show everyone how hilariously witty you can be while playing with these characters?

One of many things that I'd like to do this year with the Publications division is have pre-written content available for the Arisia Newsletter. Therefore, I propose a contest. Also posted to the Arisia LJ community, but just in case folks are interested ... )
chaiya: (ack)
... but you can't make me shine, dammit.

Now to make *even more cookies*, because we didn't keep any in reserve from the Arisians yesterday, and I promised to bring cookies to work.

Dammit. Who'd have thought that the horde would eat 7 or 8 dozen cookies? *pbbbbt*
