I'm going to start a new meme. I've been thinking recently about what to do for Channukah presents, given that most of our money is going into the house right now. So if I ran the world (or had a direct line to God) and could give people anything I wanted, here's what I would give you all:

[livejournal.com profile] ablock, I would find a time when we're both available for massage. I know you've been wanting one, I'm just having trouble working around schedules.
[livejournal.com profile] alexx_kay and [livejournal.com profile] kestrell, I would build you a library, complete with bookshelves. I hear you've got lots of books over there, and I know that Melville Keep is limited on space.
[livejournal.com profile] antoniseb, I would find you a Boston job that pays double what you're getting now and gives you hours that work around your kids' schedule. You've got great kids. :)
[livejournal.com profile] arib, I would give you a beshert. One who understands you completely and still loves you. Oh, and one who has a part in the upcoming Firefly movie, so you could have backstage passes and meet Joss.
[livejournal.com profile] avacon, I would help you accessorize your new digs. A new hot tub, maybe?
[livejournal.com profile] awfief, I would make you an amazing dinner that both kept within your points range and tasted like I would like to eat it. We could sit down with your sweetie and my sweetie and catch up.
[livejournal.com profile] beluosus, I would get you a genius grant for that journal of yours. ;)
[livejournal.com profile] bess, I would take away morning sickness. Past, present, and future.
[livejournal.com profile] bridgetminerva, I would fix your hands immediately. No pain, no surgery.
[livejournal.com profile] bryttan, all the shadow puppets you could ever hope to see. *grin*
[livejournal.com profile] catchild, I would take away the pain and leave the joy. I would also pay off your mortgage, on the condition that I get to visit whenever I want and can add on a spare guest room.
[livejournal.com profile] ceelove, I would introduce you to President John Kerry, and leave you two to talk about the environment, etc.
[livejournal.com profile] cellio, how about a teleporter, so we can visit more regularly? Could also come in handy when you want to talk with various rabbis. I don't guarantee that we'll have a Shabbos-ready model, though. You may have to wait a few years.
[livejournal.com profile] ceo, I wish you guys a happy and healthy baby. Also, a healthy college fund to match.
[livejournal.com profile] chaggalagirl, I would give you some peace of mind. *hugs*
[livejournal.com profile] chanaleh, I would give you a well-deserved break from all the boy stuff. Don't suppose you'd be interested in a nice Jewish girl, though ... *laugh*
[livejournal.com profile] cheshyre, you'd have a job you enjoy and pay you can live off.
[livejournal.com profile] coraline, I'd make your employer give you knitdays at work, when you can bring in your projects and show your coworkers and help each other out.
[livejournal.com profile] cos, I'd fix the political system, just for you. :)
[livejournal.com profile] cristovau, I'd help you prepare for being a daddy. This is gonna be so exciting!
[livejournal.com profile] crs, you could probably use a beshert, too. One to go karaoke-ing with.
[livejournal.com profile] cthulhia, I would make your family leave you alone.
[livejournal.com profile] dandelion_diva, I would fly out to meet you and have a nice cup of tea.
[livejournal.com profile] desert_born, I would help you realize just how many people like you and consider you a friend. And then if that wasn't enough people, I would give you more friends, and have them help on your new house.
[livejournal.com profile] deyo and [livejournal.com profile] mactavish, I would buy you that house with acres of self-sustaining grape vines and gently rolling hills.
[livejournal.com profile] dilletante, how about a part in Cirque de Soleil?
[livejournal.com profile] dimers, I would find you a house in Boston, and Delia a job here.
[livejournal.com profile] dreda, peace of mind. Definitely peace of mind. And lots of hugs.
[livejournal.com profile] dsrtao and [livejournal.com profile] elizabear, how about more garb for Z? You have everything else you really need. :)
[livejournal.com profile] ebonunicorn, maybe I could find you a life size black obsidian carved unicorn statue.
[livejournal.com profile] eclectician, I would give you free reign to be in Boston and Singapore whenever you wanted. Perhaps that teleporter idea isn't such a bad one ...
[livejournal.com profile] ectophylla, I would buy Chris' house and give it to you. That way, you'd never have to move again.
[livejournal.com profile] ectropy, I would immortalize your perfect breasts. ;)
[livejournal.com profile] emiko, I think I'd find you a satisfying, well-paying job. Something artsy.
[livejournal.com profile] estheruth, I never know what to give you. I would come visit you and yer boy and figure it out.
[livejournal.com profile] fennel, I would find you a regular music column, nationally syndicated.
[livejournal.com profile] folzgold, I'd give you a class to teach about political activism at your college. I think you'd be great at it.
[livejournal.com profile] fuzcat, I'd pay off your mortgage, too. It's too stressful.
[livejournal.com profile] galaneia and [livejournal.com profile] metahacker, wouldn't you like a house? One with a nicer bathroom, too.
[livejournal.com profile] gentlescholar, I'd publish your Superman story. :)
[livejournal.com profile] gh4acws, I would give you the ability to heal yourself and those you care about.
[livejournal.com profile] gilana, I would give you a condo where you could afford to live by yourself if you really wanted to.
[livejournal.com profile] gkrikket, no more migraines!
[livejournal.com profile] gnomi and [livejournal.com profile] mabfan, you guys also have it all. Maybe I'd just give you a dedicated table at Taam China.
[livejournal.com profile] goldsquare, I would give a big, fat donation to heart research in your name.
[livejournal.com profile] gravitrue, I would take away the pain.
[livejournal.com profile] gyzki, I would buy you an original Shakespeare folio. Wouldn't that be cool?
[livejournal.com profile] hakamadare, I would find you a mirror that shows you how *I* see you. I love you.
[livejournal.com profile] hawkegirl, I would help you finish a project, so you could take on two more. *grin*
[livejournal.com profile] iabervon, I would give you lots of geeky computer toys.
[livejournal.com profile] ichur72, baaaaaby!
[livejournal.com profile] jadasc, games. Lots and lots of games.
[livejournal.com profile] jdsugarhigh, you and your mom already have my sympathy about Paul. I'd make him better.
[livejournal.com profile] jducoeur and [livejournal.com profile] msmemory, I would have you over for tea with me and [livejournal.com profile] siderea. We could discuss baronial politics and psychology and all sorts of cool stuff. And play board games. :)
[livejournal.com profile] jdulac, I would present you with the first French rapier ever made. No duels, though!
[livejournal.com profile] jhill324, I would make you read LJ more often, bro. And I would straighten out all that girl stuff you always get into trouble with. Find you a nice girl, settle you down, make it last more than 6 months. I say this to you only because I'm a loving sister. ;)
[livejournal.com profile] jingsaw, I would hang out with you again. Haven't seen you in *ages*.
[livejournal.com profile] jjaquinta, I would buy you a movie theatre, where you could show all your favorites and invite all your friends whenever you want. I'd even be able to show up, sometimes.
[livejournal.com profile] joedecker, I'd buy you your own studio, complete with darkroom. And I'd hang one of your nature pictures on my wall at home.
[livejournal.com profile] jpicon, I would meet [livejournal.com profile] lpaladin, dammit! ;)
[livejournal.com profile] jtdiii, if you must insist on living Down South, I would get you one of those teleporters. Makes event-going much easier. :)
[livejournal.com profile] kalessin, I'd buy you a suit for every day of the week. You look fabulous in them.
[livejournal.com profile] katkt, I would remove your pain. I'd also make Kitkat stop biting.
[livejournal.com profile] kirkcudbright, how about you share some of your peace and tranquility? The rest of us could use some! *grin*
[livejournal.com profile] kleenestar, again, a Shabbos-friendly teleporter would come in really handy for you. And maybe I'd buy you a Boston house to match your NY place, so you could spend more time close by without having to share space with your family. *hugs*
[livejournal.com profile] kmelion, I'd stop the testing and just fix it.
[livejournal.com profile] kobold, not that you read my journal, but I'd find you a new place to live. One that doesn't leak like a sieve.
[livejournal.com profile] learnedax, I would buy you a full kit of armor, including a shield with your arms on it. (You do have arms, right?)
[livejournal.com profile] lensman and [livejournal.com profile] roaming, you two are already so rich in happiness and health. You're awesome! (I would solve the problems with B's mom, though.)
[livejournal.com profile] lightfixer, all your geeky toys are belong to you! I would shower you with geeky toys. There would be no light coming through the windows because there would be too many geeky toys in the way.
[livejournal.com profile] longuer, I would come visit.
[livejournal.com profile] lyonesse, I would take away your chronic pain. I would also find you a time machine, so you would have more of it.
[livejournal.com profile] maastrician, I would convince SJG to publish your games. :)
[livejournal.com profile] malkaesther, I would finish your house without giving you a single headache or delay. And I'd spend more time with you, too.
[livejournal.com profile] mangosteen, wouldn't you like to run your own talk radio show?
[livejournal.com profile] marmota, I would give you the Doldrums Cure.
[livejournal.com profile] melissaagray, I would make your condo purchase quick, easy, and painless. Oh, and inexpensive.
[livejournal.com profile] michigansundog, I would find you a better place than where you were the last time we talked.
[livejournal.com profile] monkeygod, I would set you up with a lifetime supply of folky girl artists, one per week.
[livejournal.com profile] moominmolly, I would have [livejournal.com profile] tafkar photograph all the cool butchy girls we know and put them on a calendar just for you.
[livejournal.com profile] n2mlq, I would go back in time and help out with Aileen's crib last night. And cuddle. I miss you.
[livejournal.com profile] nacht_musik, I would build you your own instrument cabinet, where you could keep all those things without worry for dust or heat or anything.
[livejournal.com profile] network, I would give you a lot more sleep.
[livejournal.com profile] nimir_ra_, I'm still working on this one.
[livejournal.com profile] number42, I would make you another Unique Thing if I thought I might get one back ... *tease*
[livejournal.com profile] ocschwar, I would give your mom back her other cat. That really made me sad.
[livejournal.com profile] omimouse, I would give you a photo album of the pics I took while I was visiting. A couple came out really nicely. :)
[livejournal.com profile] outerjenise, I would come over and repaint your house while you take the baby out for the day.
[livejournal.com profile] pamelina, I would do another production of Macbeth, this time being your turn at Lady M. I still think that audition was spectacular, even though Cat is doing a wonderful job with the part, now.
[livejournal.com profile] pancua, I would get the ex-friend to talk with you about it in a calm and fair manner.
[livejournal.com profile] pandaulf, I would talk it out. Honest, I would try.
[livejournal.com profile] pheromone, I would figure out how to answer your email and find the time to sit down and talk. I'd like to talk.
[livejournal.com profile] pifflegrrl, you remember that troll you had recently? I'd go find the bitch (was a female, right?) and bring her to one of your readings and have her apologize and realize what a wonderful and talented person you are.
[livejournal.com profile] pixie_ysral, I was gonna give you an Arisia membership for this year, but it looks like you're already coming, yes? Need a place to sleep?
[livejournal.com profile] pseydtonne, I'd move you further in toward the city. Your peeps need you.
[livejournal.com profile] quinnclub, I'd find you wonderful things in California, and then I'd come and visit at least as often as I see you here in Boston. :)
[livejournal.com profile] r_ness, I'd give you a food column in a travel magazine. Much traveling, much food. Yay!
[livejournal.com profile] rabbitorf, I'd bring you back next summer for a really cool internship or something.
[livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli, I would give you either 40-hour days or the ability to go without sleep. You never seem to have enough time.
[livejournal.com profile] richenza, I would pay you richly to make a feast for my wedding -- enough that you don't have to work for a year, at least!
[livejournal.com profile] rising_moon, I don't know what I would give you. Something shiny and velvet-feeling.
[livejournal.com profile] roozle, more time with [livejournal.com profile] folzgold, now that he's in school.
[livejournal.com profile] rosefox, a lifetime supply of vouchers for jet service to NYC.
[livejournal.com profile] rosif3r, a fulfilling job.
[livejournal.com profile] rscott, I wish I could afford to pay you $5K per piece for that children's book. I still have fond dreams of you illustrating it.
[livejournal.com profile] sandhawke, in light of recent discussion, I would find you a magic outfit that is weightless and bulge-less, yet keeps your body temp at an average of 72 degrees.
[livejournal.com profile] scholargipsy, I would bring you back for the winter holidays with [livejournal.com profile] pheromone.
[livejournal.com profile] schpootzie, I would make you so famous that you could live off your music, but not so famous that you had freaky stalker fans.
[livejournal.com profile] sdavido, I would give you a teacher's paradise -- fair wages, well-behaved students, and all the teaching materials you could ever hope for.
[livejournal.com profile] sec256, there's a guest room in the house, if you ever manage to come visit again ...
[livejournal.com profile] sethg_prime, I would take you on a shopping spree at a toy store. Not something lame like Toys R Us, but some cool place with Discovery toys and stuff.
[livejournal.com profile] siderea, I would help you administer the Myers-Briggs test to the city, and give a talk on the results.
[livejournal.com profile] simplykimberly, I would give Zoe and David a party at your house.
[livejournal.com profile] snarkyman, I would buy you a cool pavilion for you and your new wife. :)
[livejournal.com profile] spanishromeo40, I would buy you an iPod and a new drama teacher.
[livejournal.com profile] sstrickl, I would give you a pair of tickets to the next couple of Sox games.
[livejournal.com profile] starphire, I would build you a greenhouse for winter gardening projects.
[livejournal.com profile] sunspiral, I would get you exhibit space someplace cool, like the Museum of Science or the Aquarium.
[livejournal.com profile] tafkar, I would get you a long-term photography gig, starting with [livejournal.com profile] moominmolly's calendar. Cool stuff, though -- none of that advertising crap.
[livejournal.com profile] talonvaki, I'd get you and Dave a set of Sox tickets, too.
[livejournal.com profile] tcb, I'd sit down and make lots of ice cream with you.
[livejournal.com profile] temima, I'd get you your own apartment.
[livejournal.com profile] tenore, I'd buy you a house.
[livejournal.com profile] thran, would you like to start a dance studio?
[livejournal.com profile] torquemada, I would come out and meet you. :)
[livejournal.com profile] tpau, I would give you nothing to complain about.
[livejournal.com profile] trapon, I'd give you peace of mind.
[livejournal.com profile] tsjafo, you can have a seat at Callahan's bar, right next to mine. We'll chat for a while, buy each other drinks, and have a good time.
[livejournal.com profile] ukelele, I'd bring you and [livejournal.com profile] zogathon to a gooey chocolate party benefit.
[livejournal.com profile] warinbear, I'd make Kathy understand, and take back every hurtful thing she's ever said or done.
[livejournal.com profile] water_childe, I'd go shopping with you again at the Garment District. That was really fun!
[livejournal.com profile] wsmith, I'd get to sit and talk with you again ... it's been far too long.
[livejournal.com profile] xiphias, I wish I could give you the starter money for that Callahan's bar ...
[livejournal.com profile] yuggoth, I'd come out and see you. How're you doing, these days?
[livejournal.com profile] zachkessin, I'd stop all the bombings in Israel and make people sort it out nonviolently. This whole risking-your-life thing has got to stop.
[livejournal.com profile] zogathon, see [livejournal.com profile] ukelele's above.
[livejournal.com profile] zsquirrelboy, I'd try to stop feeling hurt and angry with you.

this is a very sweet meme. i like being easy to shop for :)

(btw, you should go by [livejournal.com profile] iabervon's office at some point, ya wanna see geeky toys! and i suspect one of the reasons [livejournal.com profile] nacht_musik moved in was so we could have the music room :)

This implies that once someone understands me completely, they cease to love me.

cthulhia, I would make your family leave you alone.

(*after* the cheques clear, right?)

I actually love my family. If I had no emotional attachment to them, or even just the concept of them, I'd've said "fuck this primitive shit" and bailed, a decade ago. I tried, and found myself missing them, or having them be the better friends in terms of understanding and forgiveness, even when we're technically not on speaking terms. (I was mentioning this to an orker. Even my most despicable sibling could probably count on me in a genuine crisis, and I them.)

My family is fucked up in ways I can predict and generally prepare for, having spent my entire life figuring out how they work. Unlike, say, most of my friends. Who do the Exact Same Shit for Entirely Different Reasons, and don't want me to deal the same way I've always dealt when it happened at home.

so, er, maybe just wish me more effective therapy, that's cheap, and accessible via teleport, or at least doesn't involve parking angst.

or wish me a nookie monster without a fear of commitment. :)

From: [identity profile] chaiya.livejournal.com
Ahhh, that could be problematic, obtaining a particular nookie monster.

(John Kovalic illustrates Dork Tower and the Munchkin cards. Somewhere, I think there's a card with Nookie Monster on it. Or is that Chez Geek?)

Re: aw

From: [identity profile] cthulhia.livejournal.com
it's on chez geek, one of the expansions.

Yeah, I want a nookie monster with higher standards than "you're breathing, I like that."

(Actually, my ideal nookie monster would be the current, sporadic one, after he gets his shit together and realizes he wants to actually date me, and exclusively, if possible.)

I feel lucky and blessed that I have a present that might actually happen. I think I might have been put off if you'd said, "I'd buy you a house" or "world peace" or something that you couldn't or wouldn't really ever be able to do, realistically. Most of those I see as "this person is my friend, of course they want my chronic pain to go away/peace in the middle east." Kind of generic.

I do appreciate the sentiment. And I think you should allow me, as your friend, to do the same for you. Remember, the joy you get out of it is the same joy I get. And you've already cooked many wonderful dinners for me. . .

*hugs*

as a sufferer of chronic pain, i don't take sentiments about it as generic. frankly, it's not that common a condition.

Date: 2004-10-23 07:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] awfief.livejournal.com
Firstly, I said "I might have been put off", not "what an awful thing to say! Everyone will be put off". I'm not even sure if *I* would be put off.

Secondly, I'm not anywhere near as close a friend to you as [livejournal.com profile] chaiya is, and I would like for your chronic pain to go away (as well as the PTSD). As a nosy person, it would have been neat to have chaiya give you, say, a fuzzy pink sweater with pockets because you love sweaters with pockets. Because I never knew that about you. Really, it's me being nosy.

Thirdly, I said, "I see it as generic." Not "it is generic." Heck, I'd like peace in the middle east more than dinner -- ALL my extended family is there and many friends. I just think dinner is more achievable, and I tend to find sentiments like, "I wish I could make all the bad things in your life go away" to be, well, obvious -- if someone's your friend, of COURSE they want you to have only good in your life. I'm crass and more spock-like than emotional, though, so there ya go. I tend to give usable, practical gifts, like a DVD player, instead of a decorative item (and the decorative item usually has more meaning, and the person is more attached to it. It doesn't make sense, it's just how I work).

From: [identity profile] lyonesse.livejournal.com
having been directly addressed thus, i thought it might be worthwhile to mention that i wasn't put off. you might have been, but you weren't thus addressed, and couldn't have been (or do you suffer from chronic pain and i just didn't know about it...?)

i do love pockets :)

[livejournal.com profile] chaiya has put a significant quantity of personal sweat (i mean that literally) into attempting to relieve my pain. so it's more personal from her than from people who haven't. maybe an appropriate analogy would be jimmy carter wishing for peace in the middle east, since, well, he's actually personally tried.

(in a roundabout way i hope this has appealed to your nosiness somewhat, b/c now you know that [livejournal.com profile] chaiya has actually done her damnedest with my chronic pain, which not that many people have :)

Nah, you don't want my pain. What would you do with it, anyway? I mean, it'd just sit there, hulking in the corner looking ominous and scaring away your guests. That's no fun. :-)

Give me inner peace instead. It's a closer way of stating the same sentiment. I'll see if I can drum some up for you, too.

Nope, haven't met him yet. I'm beginning to feel put out. After all, shouldn't I know who's got his hands all over my client? *grin*

Wadsworth? When? Perhaps I've not been invited, or I've missed the announcement.

saturday the 30th. James Bond evil villain theme.

AS for client - I'm still in the books, just on the back pages in coded letters.

Well, heck -- that one's certainly within the realm of the possible. Plausible is a slightly different matter, given the loony schedules of the people involved, but let's talk when we begin to move into winter, and things slow down a little...

Thanks...

And I wish the same for you.

You know the nicest gift you can give someone is a good wish/prayer. And 7 days of blessings/good wishes is a really wonderful thing.

Love you muchly. Really miss having you closer and seeing more of you.

I read through the list in order, so the anticipation was fairly high by the time I got the 'w's. I was . . . what's the opposite of disappointed? Yeah. I was appointed. Never mind that -- I was floored.

Thank you, Giggles. I wish something similiar would help with Jim; I suspect a better reciprocal gift would be far less diplomatic and far more violent in nature, though.

What a nice idea! Good wishes for everybody! Thanks for mine--I feel thoroughly complimented, which is a great gift all by itself. (Although I'd rather play Titania or Viola or Rosalind or Imogen or Isabella or Paulina or Emilia than Lady M, actually.)

siderea, I would help you administer the Myers-Briggs test to the city, and give a talk on the results.

Whoohoo! Today Boston, tomorrow the WORLD!!!1!one!! [sciento-maniacal laughter]

[livejournal.com profile] jducoeur and [livejournal.com profile] msmemory, I would have you over for tea with me and [livejournal.com profile] siderea. We could discuss baronial politics and psychology and all sorts of cool stuff. And play board games. :)

I'm in! That sounds totally cool. How's the Friday after Thanksgiving?
